Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge this week on Cee’s Photography at http://ceenphotography.com/2014/05/13/cees-fun-foto-challenge-nature-animals/ is Nature Animals.
Along with flowers and gardens, this is one of my favorite subjects to photograph. Most of the animals that visit our garden, possums, skunks, foxes and the like, only usually turn up in the evening and night-time hours so I don’t have any really clear images of them, but there are a few creatures who are not afraid to put in an appearance during the day and one of the most bold is my arch-nemesis the rabbit. We appear to be in a staring match, he daring me to come out and chase him off, me daring him to take a bite out of whatever he has lined up for lunch.
Another regular visitor to the garden was the thirteen-lined ground squirrel. He, or one very much like him, stayed around the house for two or three years and then disappeared. We haven’t seen any here since, possibly because of someone’s cat that is always roaming about the neighborhood and poses a constant threat to any unsuspecting wildlife.
One character that doesn’t seem to be too bothered by the cat is the squirrel. This cheeky chap makes himself at home, helping himself to seeds from the bird feeder while a cardinal looks on, wondering if there will be any left by the time he gets there. You’ll be lucky!
Last week we had a rather unusual visitor to the garden; a sora which is essentially a marsh dwelling bird (already covered in an earlier post.) At the same time that he showed up, he appeared to be accompanied by several of these white-crowned sparrows. They stayed around the bird-feeding area all day but when the sora left so did they. Strange traveling companions.
A little further from home, at the local forest preserve, this young deer wandered out into the open and surprisingly stayed there while I got out of the car and crept up quite close to take its picture.
