I was lucky enough to get a close-up view of an atlas moth that had recently emerged from its cocoon while I was at the Chicago Botanic Garden the other day.

Lucky indeed. Some great shots. Allan
Thank you, Allan! A trip to the Botanic Garden is always full of surprises. It’s never just about the flowers.
What a great experience!
Yes, it was! Thank you for visiting.
Well I’ve never seen or heard of this before. Amazing Sue, and Google says they only live 5-7 days, do not eat and only survive that long to find a mate! I hope this one had a spouse already lined up waiting for it at the Garden!
Yes, luckily there was another one hanging around waiting. A short life but a happy one.
Wow, that’s gigantic! What a cool experience and lovely shots.

Thanks, Janet! For some reason, on that day, my timing was spot on.
Incredible!
Nature is an amazing thing! Thanks for visiting, Michele.
Yes it is! You are welcome!
Incredible photos! What a moment!!
Thank you! It certainly was an awesome opportunity.
What a beautiful creature!
I’m not usually a fan of moths especially when they come indoors and start fluttering around the lights, but I have to say this one was quite extraordinary.
Wow! That’s amazing!
The patterns on it are quite striking. I’ve never seen one quite this close before.
It is spectacular, Sue.
It is gorgeous but, as someone else who was there said, “If I saw this thing flying around at home, I’d probably be screaming!”
I thought you were doing well considering…
Haha! Thanks, Tracy!
Beautiful moth!!
It is! Thanks for visiting, Indira!
Only one word: WOW!
Bernhard
That’s exactly what I thought when I saw it! Thanks for visiting, Bernhard.
Thank you for sharing such a special magical moment for both of you! Nature is wonderful and powerful!
Thank you for visiting, Marianne!

Thank you, Butterfly!
My pleasure 🤠✌️

Not native to here, TG
No, which is why they are very careful not to let anything escape as you go in and out of this exhibit.

Was not the insect scared?
Thank you! No, I think it was just happy to be out of the cocoon and in the sunlight.
