Nancy Merrill is looking for water for her Photo A Week Challenge and luckily my trip to Elgin on Saturday morning resulted in some pictures of the Fox River. Who would think that this……….
could so quickly turn into this. The river by the Veterans Memorial Park and flowing over the dam by the Kimball street bridge.

I live the first photo with the chain fence, it looks so tranquil
Thank you! Yes, the water was as smooth as glass right up until it cascaded over the dam.
We had record-breaking rain in August. Water in our basement, soaking books in our business inventory, and now a swarm of hungry mosquitoes. I have been passed that spot on Kimball Street many times, going to Hemmens Auditorium. Did the Fox flood last month?
I didn’t hear about any flooding there, although we had quite a bit of rain. Sorry to hear about the water ruining your books. That’s sad.
We only lost about 50…out of 25,000. Not much to complain about, surely, considering what others are going through this very moment.
Elgin…must be connected to Scotland somewhere in its history! Love the photos especially where the river is calm and peaceful and seen through those ornate railings.
Thanks, Marianne! According to Wikipedia, the city of Elgin was named after the Scottish tune ‘Elgin’ in 1835 by brothers James and Hezekiah Gifford. They were pioneers from New York but it’s possible they may have had some Scottish ancestry.
Thank you very much for that…I should have looked it up myself!
That’s ok, Marianne. I had already done some research for an earlier post on Elgin so I had the information to hand.
The first snap is very soothing 🙂
Yes, it was very smooth and calm on that side of the bridge compared to the tumultuous waters by the dam.
Water is such a powerful force, and it can change so quickly. Love your photos! Thanks for joining the challenge!
Thank you, Nancy!
